Battery Charging: One of the Most Dangerous Aspects of E-Cig Usage

proper charging for e-cigsThere’s been a ton of controversy over the rising popularity of electronic cigarettes within the past year. With the industry projected to surpass billions of dollars in the next couple of years, lawmakers and regulators and getting their greedy hands into the industry and citing rules and regulations that were non-existent prior to E-Cigs becoming popular. However, today we’re not going to discuss why lawmakers are deeming E-Cigs as dangerous, but instead I will tell you one of the most dangerous aspects of E-Cigs. It is not the nicotine or even the flavoring, but the battery and charging that is the most dangerous and hazardous to your health.

In the UK alone, there has been an average of one fire per week caused by an electronic cigarette. Now these are the reported incidents, whereas I assume the unreported incidents are much higher! These incidents are often caused by inappropriate charging of the electronic cigarettes. What does that actually mean? Simply put, users are charging Electronic Cigarettes with chargers that are more powerful than the batteries can take. Using mobile phone/tablet chargers to charge EGO Style E-Cig batteries can lead to disastrous results.

Mobile phone and especially tablets charges at a rate of two amps whereas the EGO Style E-Cigs, as well as the Cig-A-Like E-Cigs, are only rated to charge at 0.5 amps. Essentially users are overcharging their E-Cigs and thus pumping way too much into the tiny batteries and thus causing explosions.

To avoid future E-Cig fire related mishaps, follow these simple instructions:

  • Never charge over night
    • E-Cigs are often created by Chinese companies out to make a quick buck, although most of the time they work flawlessly, but things happen and you don’t want to be asleep if it does.
  • Always use the charger designed for the device
    • E-Cig kits normally come with a charger; use that charger
    • If the kit does not come with a charger and the vendor does not sell the charger separately, buy a charger designed to charge no more than 0.5amps
  • Never leave your charger near flammable items
    • I’m certain we all learned this in grade school but here is a refresher, never leave electronic items near old newspapers, blankets, lighter fluid, etc. Basically don’t charge your E-Cig near anything that could potentially make a fire worse
  • Never charge you E-Cigs under direct sunlight
    • I know this seems very silly and probably would never happen, however it is worth mentioning considering there were cases where this has happened in the past. The reason behind avoiding direct sunlight while charging is to prevent over heating from happening. When the battery over heats especially while charging, the E-Cig tends to have what I like to call a nuclear meltdown and quite possibly explode.

Above all else, please use common sense. If you see yourself asking whether doing something is a good idea or not, nine times out of ten, it probably is not and should be avoided.
